Esperance player Rhett Kerr was selected to play his first league game for the Subiaco Football Club. Rhett became the second player from the Esperance district to play league football for Subiaco this year.Known for his outstanding running ability, the former Gibson Junior footballer played Colts in 2007 coming third in the best & fairest and then went on to have a solid year in the Reserves in 2008. On Monday the completed the journey and made his league debut.
Unfortunately Rhett injured his shoulder last year and had to have surgery in the off season, however he has had a great recovery and now is playing very good football.
Senior coach Scott Watters stated “Rhett is another product from our Esperance zone and showed great composure in his first game against Claremont. Some untimely injuries during the last 18 months probably delayed his progression to league ranks but with consistent form in the reserves behind him he was able to make a good transition into league football and has a bright future in front of him. Rhett’s a good decision maker, shows clean disposal skills and is a quality endurance based runner. He is one of a number of young midfielders who are developing well in the league squad and we look forward to his continued improvement.”
The Subiaco Football Club conducted their senior pre season camp in Esperance earlier this year, with Rhett, Abe Davey, Julian Jacobs and Shea Mathanda all returning to their home town. It was a successful and rewarding few days and continued to build the relationship between Subiaco and Esperance District. Rhett’s selection was a huge acknowledgement for the district and the programs in place.
“It is great to see another player from the Esperance region make his debut. Rhett is a product of the development programs and has proven to be a quality footballer. Players from Esperance are having real impact at Subiaco and are helping shape the future of our club,” stated Development Manager Russell Smith.
We wish Rhett all the best.
