Colts Pre Season vs East Fremantle

The game on Saturday night was a real reality check for the squad as we the near the start of season 2010. After coming into the game with 2 very good wins against East Perth and Peel we came up against a side that had bigger bodies, was well structured and was a lot more disciplined when it came to adhering to their set ups. We went into the game with 30 players, some of them being new players into the squad.

The start really set the tone for the night as we struggled to get our hands on the football especially around clearances. Before we knew it half time had come and we were 6 goals down but it could have been a lot more. As it is still pre season we went into the second half looking to give some players more opportunities than others as some players had played considerable game time in the previous 2 games. Throughout the contest only a couple of players stepped up to the tough contest that was presenting itself for four quarters, these players were Harry Williams who backed up from kicking 6 goals against Peel the previous week and Kyle Cranley a tall mobile ruckman from the peel region.

Basic skill errors by foot let us down, where in previous weeks it had been very good.  East Fremantle’s defensive pressure on Subiaco was outstanding for the whole game. In the end we went down by 14 goals in what was a tough night for all involved at colt’s level.

The positive thing is that the playing group can learn from this and understand that you have to be at a high level of intensity and commitment every time you step onto the oval to play. This week we will have a very solid week on the track focusing on our 1 on 1 contested effort’s and our skills under pressure.

With our current squad at 60 we will be looking to trim that to 55 by the start of the 2010 season.
