The colts came up against an in-form Claremont side on Saturday at Claremont Oval.
Our win last week against South Fremantle gave us confidence going into the game knowing we were capable of playing fast attacking brand of football over four quarters. Claremont who has won their past 6 games on the trot continued their charge to a top-two finish in no uncertain terms as they outclassed our inexperienced side to win 22.8-140 to 7.11-53.
We desperately needed to put some scoreboard pressure on early if we were to pull off an upset, but our errant skills quickly put paid to that notion. We got off to a good start early winning our fair share of the footy but again our skills going forward were poor and allowed the Tigers to set the tone for the afternoon kicking four goals for the quarter. Our intensity and accountability was sadly lacking which was disappointing considering we were very good at those two things last week. We allowed Claremont to move the ball inside 50 with apparent ease throughout the day.
A 20-point quarter-time lead was built upon in the second as Claremont kicked 11 goals for the quarter to extend the margin to 73 points at the main break. Claremont’s domination continued in the last half as we offered little in the way of resistance. Brad Keast (20 possessions), Joel Ashman (15 possessions & 2 goals) and Chris Deluca provided grunt & tried hard throughout the whole game. Playing mostly at Half Back, Christian Bottechia continued his good form and picked up 17 possessions. Luke Norriss went down with a shoulder injury, but was great all day doing the 1% for the team. He will be accessed this week and hopefully isn’t as bad as first thought.
On a desperately disappointing day for the club we look to next week against East Fremantle which will be another tough challenge for our colts group but one we are looking forward too.
