Webb back to his best and reaches 150

By Chris Pike

THREE times Subiaco premiership skipper Marc Webb has rebounded to near career-best form in 2009 and plays his 150th game with the Lions on Saturday.

Webb struggled a little in 2008 due to injury and because of that had some concerns if his body would allow him back to his best, but he did hold the premiership cup aloft for the third time in September and after a strong pre-season, is leading the Lions' midfield again.

The lure of playing 150 games with Subiaco and becoming a life member was a definite spur on for Webb to continue his career in 2009 and it will be right up there as career achievements with the four premierships he's played in, three of which he did as captain.

"It was definitely one of my goals at the start of the year and it's a special club, we've achieved a lot the last few years and I've been really keen to reach 150 games to get life membership. It was one of the main reasons I played on and I really enjoy the club," Webb said.

"We have a great atmosphere there with a core group of guys who have played together a while and we're all close mates. When you have a disappointing individual year you want to prove that you can still play a bit and have a goal that you want to reach, like the 150 games for a great club."

Subiaco's midfield lost Mark Haynes, Chris Hall, Daniel Rich and Jarrod Schofield last year, so some younger players have been given a chance but Webb has averaged 24 possessions and led the way, which has pleased him after he had some doubt if he could be back to his best.

"Having a pre-season where I didn’t do a great deal of running, but a lot of cross training really helped and the fitness staff and coaches set out a great program. Last year I was struggling injury wise this time of the year, but now I'm feeling fit and really good," he said.

Rory makes his Debut

E-mail Print PDF
The Subiaco Football Club continues to blood local juniors into the League team in season 2009.

Rory Muller was the latest player last Saturday at Medibank Stadium, where the local junior from Warrick/Greenwood JFC made his debut in an important win over Peel Thunder.

Rory worked hard over the pre-season to develop his skills for senior football after a solid year in the Colts last year.  Rory was presented his playing jumper from his neighbor and SFC legend George Young. George has seen Rory develop through his football career and said some stirring words of encouragement before the game.

Senior Coach Scott Watters stated, “Rory has developed rapidly since becoming part of the senior program. His ability to create space and his commitment to team football will stand him in good stead as he continues to progress. He also possesses the valuable ability to create and kick goals which makes him an exciting prospect to watch over the next 12 months.”

The club wishes Rory all the best for his future at the Subiaco Football Club.

Modern Day AFL Game Play affects Junior Football - with James Ryan

When the likes of Mark Thompson construct a game plan that enables his side to run and carry the football through the corridor, with lots of handball and aggressive running, not only do the other AFL clubs copy it but also Junior Football Clubs.  Coaches and players begin adopting this style of play because they can see what affects it has had on AFL footy and what success it has bought the teams who use it.

When other teams begin to use this style of play coaches also have to think of a way to stop it.  One of the coaches who managed to do this is Alastair Clarkson.  Clarkson constructed a way to break down the wave running game style. Clarkson used a rolling zone to stop the run through the corridor and force the opposition to kick.  The rolling zone was one of the reasons why Hawthorn where so successful in 2008 and played a major part in their grand final triumph over Geelong.

LIONS LOOKING DANGEROUS WITH TOP SPOT UP FOR GRABS

E-mail Print PDF

By Chris Pike

A POTENTIALLY dominant ruck combination, performing veterans and promising youngsters are giving Subiaco reason to be excited about the second half of the WAFL season.

Subiaco returned to second spot on the WAFL ladder with a 21-point win over Swan Districts on Saturday and could be on top with a win over South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval this week.

A loss to Swans could have seen the Lions slip to fourth and just ahead on percentage of fifth-placed East Fremantle.

That looked likely at three quarter-time after the black-and-whites kicked eight goals to one in third term, but Subiaco finished strongly with nine goals in the last for the crucial win.

Subiaco did dominate the first half, but couldn’t put a score on the board and only led by 24 points at half-time after kicking 2.7 in the second. Coach Scott Watters was disappointed by that and certainly concerned by three quarter-time, but was delighted by his team's response.

"We had a lot of opportunities in the first half to break the game open, but our conversion just wasn’t where it needed to be. We were disappointed with that at half-time, but they are a very good side and got momentum in the third quarter," Watters said.

"They are one of the best sides at running forward of the contest and we didn’t arrest that anywhere near quickly enough. It took us until three quarter-time to readdress a few things and pleasingly we got back to some of the things that were working well in the first half. The guys responded to the challenge and that was great."

SUBIACO FOOTBALL CLUB’S BREAST CANCER CHARITY DAY A HUGE SUCCESS

E-mail Print PDF

The Subiaco Football Club together with the Breast Cancer Foundation of WA held a Purple Bra Charity Day on the 13th June match against Swan Districts at Medibank Stadium.

The official Purple Bra Day is Friday 19th June and is a major fundraiser for the BCFWA. Last Saturday over $5000 was raised for the BCFWA, with a further $1000 raised at District games the following day.

The pre game function included emotional speeches from Ros Worthington OAM, founder and patron of the BCFWA and Rhonda Forrest, mother of senior SFC player Robert Forrest who has recently fought Breast Cancer. President Neil Randall also participated raising $1800 to wear a purple bra. (Pictured)

The WAFL day was a huge success, with considerable donations being made and BCFWA merchandise sold. The umpires also wore purple to show their support and Rhonda Forrest tossed the coin with her son Robert, also pictured.

We would like to thank the BCFWA for all their help with this event and we wish them luck for next Friday.
