2017 Draft Profile - Kyron Hayden

The countdown to the draft continues with just five sleeps to Draft Day. The player profile continues with one of the most explosive candidates in the draft, Kyron Hayden.

If you needed proof that one jump can change a life, look no further then Kyron Hayden’s stunning effort at the AFL National Combine where he outjumped every player in the history of the combine including Nic Naitanui’s previous record best.

A 103cm Running Vertical Jump reiterated what every coach, scout and player had been saying; Hayden’s explosiveness was off the charts. Now every AFL club knows, Hayden is part of a new breed of footballer who produces with raw power.

Hayden first rose to prominence in 2014 after stellar performances in the National U15s Schoolboys Carnival winning All-Australian selection and the WA State MVP. He followed this by being named captain of the WA State 16s.

In a cruel turn of fate though, Hayden’s 2016 was interrupted and ultimately ended by a bout of osteitis pubis.

Despite the setbacks, Hayden remained positive and had an impact in 2017 with a strong season in the WAFL at both colts and reserves level. Hayden played in all of Subiaco’s reserves finals, including the premiership win over South Fremantle with 15 possessions, eight tackles, three inside 50s, and three marks.

Hayden finished in the top three of Subiaco’s Taylor Medal, awarded to the Colts Fairest & Best as well as the top five of the Jack Clarke Medal, awarded to the WAFL Colts Fairest & Best.

WHAT THE COACH SAYS:
One of the strongest young players I have seen. His power and competitiveness around the ball as made him one of the elite impact players this year. His attention to his rehab program after missing the 2016 season ensured his durability throughout 2017 and the accolades he earnt. Is a humble and respectful young man who thrived in his leadership role in 2017.

WHAT THE TALENT MANAGER SAYS:
It was great to see Kyron put together an injury free campaign and show what he is capable of. When is going at his best he has that explosive edge that makes him standout at any level. He really seemed to grow as a leader this year and was popular amongst his teammates.

WHAT THE SCOUT SAYS:
Hayden is as tough as they come, often throwing his weight around in the stoppages to win the contested possession, before finding a team-mate in open space. As well as being a wrecking ball in tight, Hayden is a classy player with elite disposal by hand or by foot. His composure, reading of the play, two-way running and decision-making, makes him a tantalising prospect.

WHAT KYRON SAYS:
I definitely think that my size and athleticism is a strength of mine. That’s my point of difference. I’ve monitored my load this year and handled it all well, so it’s been all sweet and I think I am ready to make the next step.
