League Coaches Report Round 15 Vs West Perth

Traveling to Arena Joondalup is always a tough assignment. The ground has different dimension to most other WAFL grounds. The weather always seems to be fairly ordinary and they have a passionate supporter group. Add to this a highly talented group of players they currently have together, we always expected a tough contest.

Although dominating the first term, we were unable to convert into scoreboard pressure. Defensively we were very sound with Aidan Parker, Greg Broughton, Robert Forrest and Darren Rumble all playing well however, we missed opportunities to break the game open.

Second quarter was an even contest.

In the third quarter we allowed West Perth opportunities to seriously challenge for a win, which lead to our three quarter time break where we re focused on a few basic strategies.

To be seven points down at three quarter time kicking into a four goal breeze and to respond the way they did says a lot about the character of our playing group. Players who were down lifted in particular spearhead Brad Smith. Senior players in Phil Read, Chad Cossom, Greg Broughton and Aidan Parker all showed great leadership and youngster Kyal Horsley provided fantastic drive through the middle of the ground.

All the above contributed to a well fought out 18 point win.

One of the other highlights to come out of the game was the 100 game milestone of Mark Haynes. Mark is a quality midfielder, who’s on field leadership continuously drives our group forward.

Challenges continue as we take on an in form Peel Thunder side. We don’t need to go to far back to remember what a danger game this is.
