Memory Lane - Round Eight Memories

Thursday, May 24, 2018 - 12:26 PM

The look down memory lane in 2018, continues as some of the great Subiaco memories and games from Round 8 are put into the spotlight.

This weekend’s opponents Perth have played off in a couple of memorable round eight encounters including a close one 33 years ago.

In other round eight memories, Jason Heatley had a big day in front of the goals supported by Karl Langdon while Haydn Bunton produced a remarkable performance against his former side.

Taking it back over 100 years, Subiaco played in one of two infamous draws against a same opponent at a same ground. These are the Round Eight memories.

1985

Subiaco 107 d Perth 104

The destination of Saturday’s next battle between Subiaco and Perth, was home of one of Subiaco’s classic round eight encounters as Subiaco and Perth played a classic match that went all the way to the final siren at Lathlain Park. The game had many lead changes and going into the last term scores were tied setting up an epic finish to the game. The last quarter was very close, however Subiaco’s four last quarter goals were enough to see them sneak away with the three point win. The match was also notable for the inaccuracy of both teams, as Subiaco kicked 15.17 while Perth kicked a woeful 13.26. This win came on the back of great performances from Dwayne Lamb who recorded 32 disposals and Rod Willet who kicked four goals. Laurie Keene was one of the guilty parties in front of goals as the big forward kicked 2.6.

2014

Subiaco 108 d Perth 74

The last Round Eight battle between Subiaco and Perth was also held at Lathlain Park, some four years ago with Subiaco recording a 34 point win. In the midst of an unlikely run towards the 2014 Premiership, top placed Subiaco were set to battle Perth who had started the season strongly to sit fourth. Despite the pre-match build of a close battle, Subiaco kicked six goals in each of the first two quarters, building a match winning 26 point half time lead. Shane Yarran in just his seventh game kicked a to that point career high four goals, while Frank Stockley had a big day in the ruck with 36 hitouts and 16 possessions. Kyal Horsley had 25 possessions while Matt Boland kicked three goals in the win.

1995

Subiaco 184 d Swan Districts 86

Round 8 of 1995 saw one of Subiaco’s great goal kicking feats as Jason Heatley produced arguably his greatest performance against Swan Districts. Heatley scored an incredible 14 goals which was a career best and remains the second most goals scored by a player in a single game in the club’s history. Further this was the most goals scored in a game in 1995. The game was controlled by Subiaco and Heatley’s performance was a massive factor in the 98 point win. The Lions led from start to finish with a strong final quarter the best of the game, bagging ten goals in the final quarter alone. Along with Heatley, Karl Langdon kicked four goals, while a young Jarrod Schofield kicked three goals.

1968

Subiaco 131 d Swan Districts 109

The legend of Haydn Bunton Jnr is a revered figure at both Swan Districts and Subiaco. After being a large part of Swans premiership success in the early 1960’s, Bunton made a significant move to Subiaco for the 1968 season. In a marquee fixture Subiaco beat Swans in Round One comfortably. However in Round 8, Subiaco would need all of Bunton’s brilliance to overcome his former side. In what was arguably his greatest WAFL performance, Bunton produced one of his best Subiaco performances recording 44 possessions and kicking a goal. His massive performance sparked a fourth quarter Subiaco comeback. After trailing the entire match Subiaco outscored Swans by eight goals to two, turning a 15 point three quarter time deficit into a 22 point win. Bunton was ably supported up forward with Austin Robertson kicking seven goals and Ross Gorton kicking five goals.

1909

Subiaco 41 drew Midland Junction 41

In a fairly unique circumstance, Subiaco’s first two drawn matches happened in consecutive games at the same ground across 1908 and 1909. After playing off in their first ever draw in 1908 against Midland Junction at the Midland Junction Recreation Reserve, Subiaco’s Round Eight encounter of 1909 was the next battle between Subiaco and Midland Junction at the ground. Remarkably the game would produce the same result with the two teams deadlocked on 41 points a piece. In a low scoring match, the two teams would remain close throughout the match. Subiaco trailed by four points going into the last quarter, but kicked 2.0 to Midland Junction’s 1.2 coming away with a draw.
