Memory Lane - Round 15 Memories

Thursday, July 12, 2018 - 1:07 PM

The 2018 weekly series looking back at Subiaco’s most memorable moments moves to Round 15.

The round 15 memories are highlighted by a couple of narrow wins, including a memorable one over foes West Perth.

Last Friday night’s win was almost a record breaker against Peel, but that low scoring record came in Round 15.

Another big win and a memorable wet weather contest at Lake Joondalup round out the top five for Round 15 Memories.

1968

-- Subiaco 101 d 98 Swan Districts --

As round 15 of the 1968 season rolled around Subiaco were in the mitts of a successful campaign sitting third in table, and were scheduled to play a bottom of the table Swan Districts side. After a dominate first quarter by Subiaco many thought they would just keep rolling on to the win, however this was not the case. The Swan Districts would mount a big second quarter comeback to bring it to within a point at the half. Although Subiaco would gain some of the ascendancy in third, the Swans would pull it back in the last to bring the game down to the wire. Subiaco would eventually come out with a three point win on the back of a massive performance from Cam Blakemore who recorded 46 disposals and a goal.

1980

-- Subiaco 87 d 86 West Perth --

The 1980 season was not one to remember for Subiaco fans, however their round 15 clash with a top 4 West Perth side was a highlight in the year. The match was tight for the entirety of the day with the margin never ballooning out to one teams favour. In one of Subiaco’s best showings for the year, they were able to play top quality footy to take the lead at the half and three quarter time breaks. Setting up a grand stand last quarter, Subiaco rallied with the help of the home fans and battled till the end where they would sneak away with the one point win. Alex Hamilton had a major contribution with 4 goals as well as Peter Munro and Paul McDonald who kicked 3 each.

2002

-- Subiaco 126 d 16 Peel Thunder --

Round 15, 2002 saw Subiaco dismantle Peel in a record performance. Subiaco hosted a struggling Peel side and would completely dominate them in every aspect of the game. Subiaco held Peel goalless for the first three quarters of the match as they reached over 100 points in that time. Peel could get nothing going against Subiaco, in part due to the great defensive game played but also due to the dominance of Subiaco. Peel would eventually score a goal in the last quarter, ending the game with a final score of 16. This is the lowest points Subiaco have held another team to in almost 100 years and will go down as one of their most dominate performances ever. The major contributors were Shane Ryan and David Sierakowski who kicked 3 goals each.

1995

-- Subiaco 181 d 76 Swan Districts --

The winless Swan Districts had a tall task when they came up against Subiaco on this day in 1995. Subiaco were the top side in the 1995 season and when they took on the Swan Districts in round 15 they showed this again. A completely dominate display through the entirety of the game left the Swan Districts without a hope in winning the game. Subiaco scored no less than 32 points in any quarter which included a massive 60 point last quarter as they ran out big 105 point winners. Jason Heatley and Kane O’Brien did most of the damage, kicking 7 and 5 goals respectively.

2017

-- Subiaco 47 d 36 West Perth --

Wet and windy conditions caused Subiaco and West Perth to play out a low scoring hard fought game of footy. The conditions played a big factor in the game, as was shown in the tackle count as Kyal Horsley, Adam Cockie and Corey Adamson all recorded double digit tackles. The hard fought match would go down to the wire as the two teams were separated by only 7 points at three quarter time. Subiaco would kick two last quarter gaols to West Perth’s one and would come out victorious with the 11 point win. Kyal Horsley put on a great captain’s display collecting 28 disposals and 12 tackles, leading his team to the tough win.
