Second Time Foley Ready for Draft

Tuesday, November 20, 2018 - 8:51 AM

It has been a year of great highs after a year of disappointments for young Subiaco midfielder Luke Foley.

After being admittedly stung by the lack of attention he received at last year’s AFL National Draft, Foley came into 2018 with a point to prove.

Prove he did, producing an outstanding year of football at Colts level and during the National Under 18 Championships as a more mature player.

Having completed a strong carnival, Foley seemed poised to have a big impact on the second half of the Subiaco colts, however an untimely injury meant he missed six weeks leading into finals.

Showing this continued dedication, Foley completed an exhaustive rehab program, getting himself fit just in time for Subiaco’s WAFL Finals campaign.

He kicked two goals in the second semi final win before producing a strong game in the Grand Final with a series of key plays including a pivotal contested mark late in the contest.

A great individual season of Foley was rewarded with team success as Subiaco’s Colts claimed the premiership and Foley ensuring regardless of what happens in the draft this week, he will always have a lasting footprint at the Subiaco Football Club.

Foley finished the Colts season averaging 25 disposals per contest and just under seven tackles per game, also showing an ability to hit the scoreboard with a goal a game.

His numbers were equally impressive at National level finishing as one of WA’s best players in the 2018 National Championships, with 17 disposals and seven tackles a game.

Foley’s improvement this year has come around the contest where he was shown an ability to win more of his own ball and improvement on his kicking meaning he is hitting more targets as opposed to 12 months ago.

These changes are pivotal in how recruiters are seeing him, with some mock drafts seeing the young midfielder rocket into top 25 calculations.

Already possessing a strong body for a 19 year old, Foley is more advanced to be able to make an immediate impact at AFL level should he get that opportunity, his play this year suggests he would step up to the extra requirement of the top level.

The two things that most stand out about Foley away from the field are his determination, passion for the game and his smile.

When Subiaco started pre-season this week, Foley was among one of the first to hit the track, showing regardless of what happens this week, Foley will be committed to Subiaco.

As for that smile, spend any time with Foley and his nature is infectious.

His love for the game comes through.

Whichever AFL club takes the chance on Foley is getting a great player and more importantly a great character.

Keep an eye on Thursday and Friday night as Foley hopes it will be second time lucky in the 2019 AFL Draft.
