Monday, July 15, 2019 - 3:51 PM

Subiaco defeated a gutsy Claremont Tigers at Leederville Oval by 8 points in a scrappy but hard fought contested battle on Sunday in their Round 14 match. The 2nd placed Tigers brought physical pressure early in the contest in a bid to take it up to the ladder leaders but it was Kyal Horsley and Ben Newton who hit the scoreboard early for the Lions before the Tigers regained some composure and hit the scoreboard with 2 majors of their own and deadlocking the score at the first change.

Captain Leigh Kitchin was in everything early with 8 first quarter possessions (5 contested) while Lachlan Delahunty (8 disposals) was also influential. The second quarter would see Claremont again take up the physical challenge and by the 18-minute mark they had hit the front by 7 points. The physical contest seemed to fire up the Lion’s and goals to Horsley, Daniel Leach and Ben Sokol saw the Lion’s head into the rooms at half time 12 points up.

The 3rd quarter would see more of the same as the two sides would only add 1 goal each to their tallies as Claremont continued to apply their pressure at the contest and the man. Ben Newton kicked his 2nd goal of the match with a classy finish but a late goal to Declan Mountford would see the margin trimmed back to 16 points at the final change.

The Lion’s dominated the start of the 4th quarter with 3 goals to Delahunty, Sokol and Ryan Borchet in the space of 8 minutes to open up a match high lead of 35 points. Claremont would do all the scoring from here on in but would ultimately fall short in an entertaining but at times sloppy encounter. Jordan Lockyer was superb all game keeping dangerous forward Tom Lee to just the one disposal, while Kitchin, Delahunty, Horsley and Newton were all strong contributors through the midfield.
