WAFL: Round 15 Match Preview vs Perth

Friday, July 21, 2023 - 9:28 AM by Matt Paddick

After a string of losses, the Lions will be looking to turn things around, when they take on Perth at Leederville Oval on Saturday July 22.

Subiaco are fifth on the WAFL ladder, and are only two wins off top spot.

With five games to go for each side over the next six rounds, this clash could spark the side as they aim to cement themselves in the top five.

FORM

The Lions haven’t been at their best in the past few weeks, albeit coming against good opponents.

Following the bye, Subiaco has had close losses to Claremont and Peel Thunder, followed by last week’s two-point loss to Swan Districts.

It puts the Lions’ record at a healthy 8-5, but they would be keen to get back to their winning ways.

Meanwhile, Perth has struggled at times during season 2023.

The side has had three losses, and one draw to the West Coast Eagles in the past month.

The Demons are sitting in ninth, but have nothing to lose when they take on Subiaco.

LAST TIME THEY MET

In round one of this year, the Demons took it up to Subiaco, but the Lions proved too strong.

The final score saw Subiaco’s 11.15 (81) defeat Perth’s 8.7 (55) at Mineral Resources Park.

The Demons had the early lead, but the experience of the Lions was too much, as they took over in the second half.

Liam Hickmott was one of the best on the day, with 23 disposals and six tackles.

ONE TO WATCH

After a lean few weeks, Ben Sokol will be looking to recapture his early season form.

The key forward has kicked 36 goals and is tied first for the Bernie Naylor Medal.

After kicking two goals in three weeks, the 27-year-old will be looking for a big return against a team he historically has enjoyed playing against.

Sokol averages 2.5 goals per game against the Demons, and has kicked five or more against them on four occasions.
