Subiaco’s Premiership defence halted by Falcons

Subiaco won’t be able to defend their Premiership, falling short of the Grand Final following a 37-point loss to West Perth in Mandurah on Sunday September 17.

A six-goal to one opening term created a buffer for the Falcons, with the Lions forced to play catch up for the rest of the match.

West Perth’s accuracy in front of goal proved to play a role, with Subiaco able to get the scoring shots on the board.

Unfortunately it was a bridge too far, taking the 14.4 (88) to 7.9 (51) loss.

However, in a model of consistency for the side, the Lions have made the preliminary final on four consecutive occasions in the Reserves competition.

West Perth opened their account with the first two goals of the match.

Campbell Henderson was able to counter with a goal, but it failed to swing the momentum.

The Falcons kicked the next five goals, getting the lead to 36 points.

With the game on the line, Keeshawn Cook was able to kick a major, starting a fight back from the Lions.

Henderson followed up for his second goal, while Corey Hitchcock kicked truly to peg back the margin.

Needing a strong second half, Subiaco put in the effort, but the Falcons were too strong.

They kicked four goals to the Lions’ one for the term, putting the result in doubt.

Subiaco rolled the dice in the last, with some effect.

Repeat inside 50s led to scores, but a perfect quarter was needed.

The Lions kicked 2.6 to West Perth’s two straight, putting an end to the Lions’ season.
